Brides often ask me whether they should do a first look on the wedding day. My answer is always yes. I do love the traditional element of surprise and that look on the groom’s face as he sees his bride walking down the aisle for the first time. However, I think all the benefits to doing a first look makes it an easy decision. Here are 5 reasons why I think you should have a first look on your wedding day.

The first reason is that there IS still that element of surprise of seeing each other for the first time. However, the first look allows more privacy. You get that little bit of alone time with your significant other. On a wedding day, it’s hard to escape for a moment where it’s just the two of you. Setting aside time for the first looks allows for that special moment of privacy.

The second reason is because you will both be able to freely express how you feel about the other. You can tell each other exactly how you feel seeing the other for the first time on the wedding day. If you only see the other person during the ceremony, you’re limited to what you can say. Also, you will be able to share how you’re feeling whether it is excitement or nervousness at that moment.

The third reason is that it will allow you additional time for couple’s portrait. You will be freshly glammed and he will be looking sharp. It will be the perfect time to go ahead and get all the couple’s portraits out of the way of just the two of you. Which leads into the fourth reason, which is that it will also allow you time to take photos with the full bridal party. You will have that time prior to the ceremony to take photos of you and your full bridal party.

Finally, the fifth reason that you should have a first look is because it will allow for additional time for family portraits after the ceremony. A lot of ceremony happens during sunset. Your time is limited after the ceremony since the sun will be setting. If family portraits are important to you, then you may want to use that time for family portraits.

Those are some of the reasons why I think as a wedding photographer, that you should have a first look on your wedding day.
