Engagement Session Outfit Inspiration from a Dallas Wedding Photographer

Are you having a hard time deciding what to wear to your engagement session? I can help with that! Being a Dallas wedding photographer, I have photographed a number of engagement sessions. I have a pretty good idea of what photographs well and what doesn’t. Here are some ideas on what to wear to an engagement session.

First off, you have to decide what look you are going for. Do you want a dressy look or a casual look? For my engagement sessions, I allow my couples to have an outfit change. I usually recommend that they have both looks– a formal outfit and a more casual outfit. That way, they can have a bit more variety in their gallery. However, if you are only limited to one outfit, decide which look you favor more.

Second, the goal is to coordinate with one another and not be matchy-matchy. Try to pick colors that would compliment each other and not have it be the exact same colors. If you like that light and airy look that are in most of my photos, then you should go with the lighter, more neutral colors. Blush, light pinks, cream, grays, and light blue are all great color choices. White is also another great color option and can make you feel more like a bride.

For the ladies

Ladies, if you are wanting a romantic, feminine feel to your photos, flowy dresses or skirts are a great option! I love these types of maxi skirts or dresses for my engagement sessions. They are great for twirling photos! Soft, tulle skirts or dresses are also great and gives off that romantic, dreamy feel as well.

For the guys

I recommend wearing a solid shirt instead of a patterned one for the guys. If the shirt is patterned, it is better to have a bigger type of pattern than the smaller ones. I find the smaller ones appears very distracting in photos.

A few more things to think about

As far as accessories, I recommend that you do not wear sunglasses for your engagement sessions. It takes away that intimate feel of an engagement session. Also, trendy hats can look great in photos, but you may not want to wear it for all your photos. Some hats can create shadows and hide parts of your face in the photos.

Lastly, I recommend that you wear something that not only makes you look good but that you are comfortable in. The outfits you choose should not only accentuate what you love about yourself but also make you feel good. If it is too loose or too tight, you may feel uncomfortable throughout the session. You should feel confident in your outfit choices!

Another thing to think about is having your hair and makeup professionally done. Doing so can complete your look and give you that extra boost of confidence. It also can double up as a trial makeup run for your wedding day!

I hope these few tips help you as you are deciding what to wear to your engagement session. Don’t forget to have fun during your session and congratulations on your engagement!
